Burton hockey begins again! 2005 will be a really interesting year for Burton. With longtime stalwarts Bernie and Lorne now gone, the task of keeping the spirit of Burton alive rests upon the shoulders of our new core group who were all in force this Sunday. Lee once again has provided a brilliant summary for you all.

First session of the year, less than halfway through March, although we were close to pulling one off in February. That really would have been something.

The weather was perfect, we couldn't have picked a better day to start off the year. Although Ollie brought his winter coat, we all played in t-shirts, except, come to think of it, Ollie. The rust was evident, the pace started fast and furious but by the second game it toned down. Fortunately, everyone was equally un-prepared for the rigorous demands of 4 hours of Burton United Socialist Hockey. Some brilliant goaltending led to some long games, and some truly spectacular saves by both goalies. I probably should have had 20 goals. It should also be noted that Justin played with a wronghanded stick. Kudos to him, he led the session in goals with a truly formidable backhand.

Heres the breakdown:

Series One: Lee KJ Laird w/ Chris J vs. Seamus Graeme Ollie Justin w/ Lyle.
After a hot start and 3 quick goals by Lee Lyle shuts the door and team Seamus comes storming back to win 5-4. Game 2, after another 3-0 lead, this time team Lee keeps on the pressure and wins 5-1, brilliant goaltending from Chris. Game 3 goes down to the wire, finally own by team Seamus on a goal by Justin to win 5-4, and the series 2-1.

Series Two: KJ Graeme Justin w/ Lyle vs. Lee Laird Seamus Ollie w/ Chris

In a repeat of the first series game one, Team Lee goes down 4-1 before storming to win 5-4. Lee assists on all goals. The second game was a stomping, 5-2 Team KJ, Lyle stonewalls Team Lee, and especially Lee, making brilliant save after save. The final game, with EVERYONE dog tired, was another close contest. Team Lee took it 5-4, the series won on a gritty individual effort by Seamus.

Useless Stats: Lee takes the opening session with 10 goals and nine assists. Justin and Seamus were right behind with 12-5 and 10-5 respectively. Obviously, they constitute the seasons leader scorers at this time. Chris continues his dominance in net into 2005 with an .802 performance to start the year as opposed to Lyles .764. Justin and Lee have their 15th ten-goal sessions while Seamus pots his eleventh. This was Seamus fifth-straight ten-goal session, the second-longest streak of all time; this was Lees third-straight such session. Lee ties Oliver for most 15-pointers with 20, Justin is at 18 and Seamus 13. These are the fifth-straight 15-pointers for Seamus and Lee. Oliver plays his eleventh consecutive session, Justin and K.J. their seventh, Lee his sixth and Chris his fifth. Chris records his fifth straight 80-save session and Lyle his fourth. On the all-time front, Oliver reclaims his title as Burtons all-time scoring champion, 797-792 over Lorne. Justin is just one point behind Bernie for third all-time, 524-523. Lee needs five points to become the fifth player to hit 500 points. Seamus crosses the 400-point barrier while Laird needs two points to do the same. Justin needs eight goals for 300. Lee is just three assists behind Laird for fifth, 221-218. Seamus crosses 200 assists. The battle for third in shots between Justin and Lee continues, 1226-1218. Chris passes Joern for third in all-time saves. Oliver also reclaims the all-time games played mantle 468-467 over Bernie. On the SDF, Lee passes Justin for third as Lorne falls from seventh to thirteenth. It wont be long until Dallass sessions drop off and Lee or Seamus take over number one. Chris continues to dominate the GDF as his rating goes back over .800. Lyle falls to fourth behind Brady.

Burton Cup: A new year means new standings, and 2003 champions Ukrainian Team Bourque take the early charge thanks to Lee. The newly amalgamated Government Hill Lords are right behind along with defending champs Republic of Ireland. There naturally will not be any rookie or Fauquier standings yet. Dont forget to check out the records and honours link on the home page. Hockey started very early this year, this is a good sign!
