Vancouver Roller Hockey got together with old friends and new to play the seasons longest session with some, well, interesting, goaltending. As the Burtonians get drunk this weekend in honour of Queen Victoria, Klopp dishes out the feedback from Ambleside this week.
Well, hockey was had for the first time in a good stretch. It was a bit
questionable this morning with some overcast skies, but it pulled through,
without a single drop. We saw today a new player, and the return of an old
player. The new player is Tony's cousin Duncan Mathieson, and the returning
playing is Dorian Turner. We got a good 9 games in today with quick play.
This session also featured one of the greatest comebacks of all time. Game
#7, Dorian, Duncan and Stefan found themselves way down early 4-0. Then
Dorian turned it up and started putting on a clinic. He also joined the rush
often and was used as a third man on the point, which really helped the flow
of the offense. Bernie, Lorne and Tony at this point were simple too tired
and couldn't keep up. After Joern shouted out to his teammates "Get one more
for me here" is when the floodgates opened and team Dorian, Duncan and Stefan
scored 5 unanswered goals.
All in all a fantastic long session (noon till 4:30-ish) that has put the
wheels of motion back into the VRH.
We have been having some crazy sessions lately from BUSH, and it looks like VRH is having a crazy time of their own. Nine games in a marathon four-and-a-half session. And, yet, you wouldnt know it from the shot total. You certainly would from the scoring stats, however. Stefan took charge with an excellent 21 goals and 11 assists in 56 shots to register a career-best 32 points, the seasons high water mark. Duncan impressed in his first session with 18G-9A for 27 points, the best rookie session weve seen since Dustin Blair back in 2001. Lorne was a bit off points-per-game-wise but still kept up with 15 goals and 22 points. All three of them shot over thirty percent. A special shout out to Dorian in his first session since the abortion in Calgary over three years ago. In just four games out of the net, he shots fifty percent and notched 14 points. He also was particularly good in goal at .839; certainly, this must be one of the better dual performances weve seen in a session. The other goalies? Well, um, lets just say that VRH is happily awaiting the return of Carlos and Bron. Joern hasnt broken out of his slump, posting a .686 with 81 saves in the nine games. And Tony? Well, Ill just post the number and let you ponder this for a while: .471. (Oliver sighs.)
Useless Stats: With Jason off on his Pearl Jam odyssey, Stefan is now poised to run away with the scoring title (barring a barrage of BUSH sessions, natch) as he smashes through the 50-goal and 100-point barriers for the year. He holds a 117-75 lead over Lorne in scoring and leads Lorne 68-48 in goals. Stefan also leads in assist with 49; Bernie is second there with 42. Duncans massive debut just gets him into the top ten in scoring ahead of Graeme. Stefan also takes the shot total lead back from Seamus, 259-241. Lorne trails Lee by one shot for third. Duncan gets enough shots in this session to be eligible to take the shooting percentage lead for the year at 34.62 with Jason, Stefan and Lorne bunched up behind at around 26-27 percent. Joern moves into fifth in saves ahead of Lorne. Joern and Stefan have played all 39 VRH games this year (compare this to 21 BUSH games played this year in which Lee, Seamus and Chris have in every one). Joern has goaltended 16 of those games, fourth-most this year. Stefan leads Jason in three-star points 55-40; Lorne is tied with Oliver for fifth. Duncan ties Lee for the lead in GPG at 2.00 while Lorne falls from first to fourth behind Seamus. Stefan drops to sixth. One category where VRH is not making inroads is shots-per-game. The inhuman shot totals coming out of BUSH this season compared to the wacky goaltending of VRH makes a big difference there. Both leagues are very fast-paced, but for different reasons. One week after Lee sets the leading session scoring total for the year with 28, Stefan sets the bar even higher with 32 (albeit in two more games). Duncans 27 points rank third for the year. Stefan also leads in session goals for the year with 21. Duncans 18 ties for second with Lees total from last week while Lornes 15 rank fifth for the year. Strangely, no one posted within the top seven in either assists or shots. Dorians debut session in net was the fifth-best performance this year at .839.
On the all-time front, the back-and-forth cross-province battle for the all-time scoring lead continues as Lorne retakes the lead 953-935 over Oliver and becomes the first player to reach 600 goals. Bernie is six points behind Lee for third all-time. Stefan needs two points to reach 500 points. He passes Seamus for fourth in shots. Joern passes 1,500 saves. Lorne passes 350 games played. Joern is four games behind Nathan for third in games goaltended. Stefans 21 goals is the fifth-highest session total of all time and the highest total in two years. Duncans 27 points is the second-highest scoring session ever for a rookie. His 18 goals rank third and his nine assist rank fourth for rookies. His 52 shots rank fifth. Dorians .839 is the fifth-highest save percentage for a rookie goaltender. Lorne is the first player to reach register 500 three-star points. Stefan ties Joe and K.J. for sixth in ten-goal sessions with eleven. Lorne has five consecutive ten-goal sessions, as well as the same amount of consecutive 15-pointers. Stefan becomes the sixth player to notch ten 20-pointers as well as the eight player to register a 30-pointer. Oddly enough, this was Stefans first fifteen-goal session, let alone his first 20-goal session. Stefan becomes only the seventh player in Burton history to post 20-goals in a session. Duncan breaks the fifteen-goal and 25-point barriers in his first session. Bernies consecutive session streak is now the eight-longest of all-time at fourteen. Joerns streak goes to ten, and Stefans to seven. Under the assumption that there will be no BUSH session this week, this VRH session will simply be added to last weeks BUSH session to amend the SDF and GDF for the week overall (if BUSH does play, then the old points would come off as usual and both sessions would be added for a new ranking rather than an amendment). The only big change thus sees Lorne fall behind Lee into third on the SDF. Duncan debuts 13th. Joern moves ahead of Tony on the GDF into fifth. Dont forget those Records and Honours, and come back next session to see whether its BUSH and their amazing shot totals and goaltending, or if its VRH with their speed and accuracy!
