Ed. note: Finally…

Sandwiched in between days of perpetual rain we finally received a gift from the Gods, a gloriously sunny Saturday (the first one in well over a month). Initially the session appeared to be in jeopardy as we had only one goaltender confirmed; luckily J-Bo came through in heroic fashion, procuring a second set of goalie equipment for us (more on that later).

As we arrived at the rink we were a little shocked to see large puddles on the road, and sure enough the rink (well half of it at least) was still wet, despite it being dry and sunny all morning. Nevertheless, once some of the gunk was removed from the corners, the rink, though a little slippery, was quite playable.

Today’s session was interesting on numerous different levels: it featured VRH’s first ever female player; it featured numerous different goalies, including 2 goaltending debuts; it featured a surprise appearance by Downet Mignon running on 2 hours sleep. Of course Pat dominated once again, but that is barely worthy of mention anymore as it has become so customary.

The first game featured Sam in net (who had also brought his own gear) on the better of very lopsided teams. This game was over very quickly with a 5-0 rout giving Sam a shutout in his goaltending debut. The fact that Jordo’s blades were toast at this point more or less forced him to volunteer to play in net. This also resulted in Sam ending the day with no goals allowed and a 1.000 save percentage, rendering him the all-time SV% leader (when minimum number of games is not factored in).

As Jordo began putting on the goalie equipment that Barlow had brought (it should be noted that this was the same equipment used in the OLN television show ‘Road Hockey Rumble’) we immediately noticed that the equipment was very large; the pads went almost up to his waist. The end result was Jordo transforming from a 130 pound ‘skinny rat’ into an enormous Garth Snow like entity (pictures were taken on Jordo’s camera). Also, quite humorous was J-Bo’s warning, seconds too late, that there was a cobweb in the mask, resulting in a few shrieks and subsequent removal of said cobweb from Bones’ head. We didn’t quite know what to expect with Downey in goal, but we were all thoroughly impressed with his play; though he let in a couple weak goals in the later games, he made up for it with plenty of spectacular saves, and some absolute robberies.

Near the end of the third game, the Rhyme-nocerous arrived along with a friend, Prairie Chiau. Having never had a female player in VRH (and she hadn’t played hockey in almost 10 years) we weren’t quite sure what to expect, but Prairie more than held her own; she was very strong on the puck and solid defensively. On one particular play her aggressive forechecking resulted in her stealing the puck from Melvin, and scoring a goal on the subsequent partial breakaway. This would be the first ever goal scored by a female player in Burton Hockey. She added one more later in the session, for good measure.

Through making a few trades and playing Dom against Pat almost the entire session, we managed to have very even teams throughout, with only a couple games all day being lopsided affairs. Numerous very close hard fought 5-4 games were recorded on this day. The last series was especially grueling as Jordo and Sam had left (Tony H. played goal) leaving only one team with a sub, and leaving everyone exhausted at the end of the 9th game. The final game also had a very uncharacteristic finish, with Pat falling down and losing the ball to Ollie, who went on to score winner.

With two VRH sessions already in the books barely past the midway point of January, the 2010 season is already shaping up to be one of potentially legendary status. Let’s hope we get an unusually sunny conclusion to winter and an even sunnier spring!

Another huge day for Pat with his third-career 36 point session, an obliteration of the field by any standard at 24G-12A on 81 shots. You have to drop all the way down to 19 points to find second star Oliver (7G-12A). Jordan Barlow remains rock-solid in third at 9-and-9. Sam(12G-2A) and Tony (6G-8A) certainly would have had stars if they had skated all day. A blah day in goal; Dom led the way with .765 on 104 saves. The opposing net saw three different goalies led by Sam pitching a seven-shot shutout in his debut excursion, followed by Jordan Downey stopping 67 of 92 shots for .728 before giving way to Tony who was an even 30-for-40 and .750. Throw in eleven players, nine games and the first ever female goalscorer in Burton history, Prairie Chiau (to go with Burton’s first female shutout goaltender last month in Crystal Townsend), and it was a huge day indeed for VRH.

Here are the game scores:
Pat Melvin Oliver Sam def. Barlow Downey Tony Bernie Dom 5-0
Pat Oliver Bernie Downey def. Barlow Tony Sam Dom 5-4
Pat Melvin Ryan Bernie Sam Dom def. Barlow Oliver Tony Prairie Downey 5-1 4-5 5-3
Pat Bernie Tony Prairie Downey vs. Barlow Melvin Oliver Ryan Sam Dom 5-3 4-5
Ryan Oliver Melvin Dom def. Pat Bernie Barlow Prairie Tony 5-4 5-4

Season Stats: Pat’s scoring lead is already a bit overwhelming; at 48 points after two sessions, he’s 20 ahead of Oliver with Jordan Barlow just one point behind him. You have to go down to 14 points to find Tony and Sam in fifth. Even more impressive is Pat’s goalscoring lead; 31-13 over second-place Oliver. Barlow sits one goal behind him along with Sam. The assist race is a bit tighter with Pat at 17, just two ahead of Barlow and Oliver with Bernie and Tony rounding out the top five. Pat’s 129 shots on goal are far ahead of Oliver at 62. Shooting percentage went way up today; Sam shoots up into the lead at 28.57 ahead of usual suspects Barlow and Pat. Dom falls behind Bron to second in save percentage and under .800. He has a 100-save lead over second-place Downey. Two sessions in and already we’re down to Barlow, Oliver, Pat and Dom as the players who have been in every game. Only Dom has goaltended every game. Sam has the only shutout of the young season. All of the season’s session scoring records were naturally obliterated today so it’d be redundant to list them.

On the All-Time Front: Oliver is slowly closing back in on Lee’s newfound all-time scoring lead while BUSH waits to start its season; Ollie’s got it down to 34. Pat passes Robert Rogers to enter the top 15 all-time; Sam moves from 30th to 27th. Pat becomes the 16th player to score 200 goals and now lies 14th. Oliver becomes the first player to score 1,000 assists. Bernie needs 14 assists for 600. Pat moves into the top 15 and Barlow into the top 30. Pat passes 700 shots on goal. Dominik records his 1,000th save and passes K.J. for eleventh in saves. Downey plays his 100th game (Pat needs two and Tony six). Sam records a shutout in his only game in net. Pat has the second-longest 15-pointer streak ever at 12 (K.J.’s current streak is a record 15). Jordan Barlow has three in a row for the first time. Pat becomes the tenth player with ten 20-pointers; all of his are in a row. And to top it off, he becomes the first player in history to pull off back-to-back 30-pointers in full sessions. Pat becomes the second person to score ten goals in ten straight full sessions after Robert Rogers (12). Pat ties Kyle for fifth in 15-goal sessions with seven; he has two in a row. He extends his 20-goal record to five sessions. Oliver records his 40th ten-assister. Pat has back-to-back ten-assisters. Oliver plays his 43rd consecutive session, Dominik his tenth. Pat’s 36 points this session ties with three others for the fifth-highest scoring session ever; Pat has three of those eight. His 24 goals also ties for fifth-best ever. Bernie joins Stefan and Oliver as those who have played in all eleven season of Burton Hockey.

SDF/GDF: The SDF gods seem to have it in for poor Lee Orr. Just fractions of a point away from finally reaching the top of the chart, BUSH goes inactive throughout January just as VRH begins to heat it up. Indeed, Pat Elischer now moves back over the minimum session threshold and moves back into the top position, one he won’t give up for a long time it appears. Lee is second (again) with Kyle falling to third. Barlow continues to climb; Ryan and Bernie enter the top twelve. Little change on the GDF as Seamus spends his fourth straight session and 14th overall on top. Shem falls from third to sixth as he slips under the minimum, bringing Dom up to fifth.

Let’s hope the momentum continues. Until next time, check out the Records and Honours pages in the Links section.
