VRH continues to get games in during this very mild January. As well, it continues to be co-ed friendly, with Shaylin's girlfriend Monika Nymeyer getting into the action today. All in all, we had enough for 3-on-3 today with a sub on each side and a return back to the classic battle of two all-star calibre goaltenders (Bron vs. Dom) that has riveted VRH for the past 2 seasons. While some of the boxscores might not project it, a lot of the games were closer than you might imagine, which is why we tried specific teams a few times before changing them up. 9 games were played in total today (Barlow playing 8 of 9). Also of note, the weather report was right on the money. Dry in the morning, with showers in the afternoon. After 4+ hours of hockey the rain finally started to fall, which was fine with us, as none of us could skate at that point.

First 3 games had Joern, Monika, Oliver, Stefan and Bron up against Barlow, Bernie, Downey, Shay and Dom. Team Dom would go on to win all 3 games as Team Bron did all it could to try and put the puck past a stingy Dom in net. As you can see by the shot totals, the play was actually really even; the difference came down to how ridiculous Dom was playing (no slight on Bron, he was, as usual solid).

Our next couple of games gave us Barlow, Bernie, Downey, Stefan, Bron vs. Joern, Oliver, Monika, Shay and Dom. The first game was taken by Team Dom to continue his dominance in net. However, in the second game, Team Bron started to click and made swift work of Team Dom 5-0.

Game 6 was another set of new teams, and another shutout, this time for Dom, as his forwards of Bernie, Jordan D, Oliver and Stefan put things away.

The next couple games we found some balance once again with Bernie, Jordan D, Joern, Oliver and Bron taking on Jordan B, Monika, Shay, Stefan, and Dom. The first game ended for Dom 5-3 after a really tight battle. The second game lead to a solid comeback from Team Dom to finish off the overtime 5-4. There was a good 25 minutes during this game when nobody on either team scored due to the amazing goaltending happening on both ends of the rink.

Since the weather was still holding out, we decided to play one final game. This was too much for Jordan B, who took off at this point, so we fabricated the following teams to close things out: Joern, Jordan D, Shay, and Bron vs. Bernie, Monika, Oliver, Stefan, and Dom. This last game looked as if it would be a complete blowout as Team Dom took a really quick 4-0 lead. Then, one by one, Team Bron slowly started to mount a comeback. Joern and Jordan continued to crash the net on Dom. Finally we were left with a sudden death overtime. At this point the game got sloppy, really sloppy. Team Bron without a sub could barely skate and were leaving him out to dry left and right. As the game opened up with attacks by Team Dom, Team Bron would counter sending a lone player away on a break against Dom. Finally, the game was finished on a quick shot by Stefan to seal the victory for Dom.

A few more notes: Monika played a decent defensive game for her first time ever playing hockey. She is a really excellent skater (from her days of figure skating), who could use a bit more practice with a hockey stick. One memorable moment was when Oliver was dangling through the slot, Monika full on slammed into him sending him sprawling to the ground. Oliver wasn't the only one of her victims as she earlier had dropped Downey. With a little practice Monika could make a solid player for VRH. As stated above, both goaltenders were extremely solid today; however, it was Dom who stole the show. He made some saves today that you would think weren't even possible. Shaylin played probably his best game he has played with us to date. He was solid on the puck, had a strong forecheck, and netted some really nice goals. Final note, it was good to see Jordan Downey in a new set of skates. He looked good out there with them, despite the pains of a new set of skates.

Thanks, Stef! Dominik threw down masterwork today and is certainly making an early run at Most Outstanding Goaltender, as he drove the opposition into submission today with .863 on 169 (the second-highest total ever in VRH and fifth all-time). Throw in a shutout and eight wins from nine games, and Dom was just a one-man wrecking crew. Even with 154 saves, Bron was left in the dust at .798; a very good session normally – Dom was just in another dimension today. Also impressive was Stefan’s 29 points today, as he set a VRH record with 90 shots on goal. You have to go down to 20 points to find Oliver in second. It’s very reasonable to assume that Jordan Barlow would have have been second if he had played the final game; instead he finishes in third with 19. It was a career session for Shaylin as he finished fourth with 16 points.

Here are the game scores:
Barlow Bernie Downey Shay Dom def. Joern Monika Oliver Stefan Bron 5-1 5-3 5-3
Barlow Bernie Downey Stefan Bron vs. Joern Oliver Monika Shay Dom 3-5 5-0
Stefan Oliver Bernie Downey Dom def. Barlow Joern Shay Monika Bron 5-0

Season Stats: Things are nice and tight now at the top of the charts this year, as Oliver moves into a tie with Pat for first at 48 points. Just two points back lie Jordan Barlow and Kyle Grenier. Stefan jumps into fifth. Stefan also jumps to third in goals ahead of Oliver and Lee. The top three spots in assists are now held by Oliver, Barlow and Bernie. Stefan and Oliver are tied for third in shots on goal at 122 with Barlow moving up to fifth. Barlow falls from the top five in shooting percentage. Dom moves to second in save percentage with .825 and first in saves at 331. Bron is narrowly behind Seamus for second in saves and remains above .800 for the year. Oliver and Dominik have played all 21 VRH games this season. All three shutouts this season have come from VRH goalies (Sam, Bron, Dom). Stefan moves into a tie with Kyle and Oliver for second in three-star points, five behind Pat. Dom takes the lead in goalie star points from Seamus and ties pat for the lead in total star points. Barlow passes Stefan for fifth in APG. Stefan falls behind Rob to fifth in shots-per-game but still remains above 10.00. Dominik moves from fifth to third in saves-per-game. Stefan’s 29 points today ranks third for sessions this season so far. His 18 goals rank second, as do his 90 shots on goal. Barlow, Stefan and Oliver tie for fourth-highest in assists with eleven apiece. Dom’s .863 is the second-best goaltending session this year, and he and Bron have the top two save totals this season. Dom’s 1027 PPS today just edges Seamus’ 1021 for top this season; Bron’s 952 ranks third.

On the All-Time Front: Oliver needs 15 points for 1,700. The never-ending battle between Stefan and Seamus for fourth turns back to Stefan today. Barlow enters the VRH all-time top ten and top 25 overall. Bernie needs six assists for 600. Bron passes Chris for third in all-time saves as he begins chasing down Nathan and Laird at the time. He also passes Joern for fourth in games goaltended and is just three behind Nathan at 238. Dom needs ten for 100. Stefan passes Justin for seventh in games played and needs five for 500. Can you believe that was Dominik’s first-ever shutout? (Bron has 16 of them, by the way.) Stefan passes Seamus for third in three-star points; Oliver ties Seamus for fourth. Bron passes Justin for second in goalie star points. Shaylin has his first career 15-pointer. Jordan Barlow has four in a row. Oliver ties Kyle for fifth in 20-pointers with 17. Stefan moves into third in ten-assisters with 16. Oliver has back-to-back ten-assisters for the seventh time. Dom has back-to-back 100-savers. Bron gets within one session of Nathan’s 90-saver record, 20-19. He does tie Nathan in 110-savers at twelve and is second in 120-savers at seven. He becomes the third player to have five 130+ savers along with Chris and Nathan (Dom has four). Oliver plays consecutive session #44. Dom goes to eleven and Barlow to five. Dom’s 164 saves today rank the fifth-highest ever for a single session. Joern brings the number of players who have played in all eleven seasons to five.

SDF/GDF: As expected, adding this session to Thursday’s BUSH session brings VRH players shooting up the ranking, most notably Stefan as he returns to the top reaches of the chart in fourth. Joern moves into the top 12. On the GDF, Bron goes back over the minimum and rises to fifth, with Dom hot on his heels as they climb toward the top.

Another huge session from VRH as they make every outing count. Until next time, check out the Records and Honours pages in the Links section.
