It is usually never good to start the day being woken up by a distress call due to a server failure, especially after being out late the night before at Jordan's place. However, as I crawled into my living room and looked outside, there was a brightness to the dull clouds and, most importantly, no rain. I had sent out the hockey email the night before, and checked it before I went to bed. The two biggest names that gave me hope were Bron and Dom. With 2 goalies anything is possible.

So, after fighting a few fires with the server issues I took to the phone. First I roped in Oliver. He was sound asleep as I expected, but knowing the answering machine is right beside his bed I simply went on rambling until he picked up the phone. Oliver was in. Next up was Jaybo via text message, and Jason Leung via MSN. Both in. We had numbers for 2 on 2, game was on. As I confirmed everything I threw out a Hail Mary to Pat and Rob who were also at Jordan's the night before. Within 10 minutes I had responses from both. It was on, 3 on 3 at Ambleside to start the 2010 season for VRH!

We got to the rink to find it nice and damp. Pretty much as we expected. However, after putting on the blades and giving it a test skate, we learned it was easily playable. So we setup teams based on color of shirts and away we went. First game we were without Rob, so we had Pat, Stefan and Dom pitted against Jason, Jordan, Oliver and Bron. This is what is called the full game power play. Team Dom fell behind early; however, Pat and Stefan started to find the openings in the 3-man defence and started to make a comeback. Eventually the game found itself tied 4-4. Once more a seam was found in the unstoppable Oliver/Jordan/Jason defence, and Team Dom came out victorious.

The second game we simply added Rob to Dom's team and away we went. This game was completely dominated by ridiculous goaltending. Both Dom and Bron were standing on their heads. Team Bron came out to a really quick start and built up a 3-0 lead. Team Dom got 1 goal past Dom, but Team Bron came back again with a goal of their own. Down 4-1, Team Dom started to rally, and Rob got into the mix, setting up both Pat and Stefan. Before you knew it another game was tied 4-4, as the comeback by Team Dom was mounted. One more tic-tac-toe for Team Dom saw victory go his way once again.

Game 3 we did sticks in the middle, what came out was Jason, Pat, Stefan and Bron vs. Jordan, Oliver, Rob and Dom. Once again, another well-balanced game and another amazing goaltenders’ duel. Goals were traded back and forth as each team rallied to one up the other. Jason at this point had his wheels giving out, as well as his ankles, yet still stood strong on defence. Most everyone else you could tell were wearing thin on this first session of the year. So, what would today be if the score didn't end up being 4-4, sending the 3rd game of the day to sudden death overtime? Dom did his part in shutting the door on Pat's barrage of shots, and finally Oliver was able to break Bron by throwing in the winning goal of the final game of the day.

At this point Dom had to leave, and the rest of us were feeling the tire from the night before. However, today was an incredible day of hockey. The competition level was high, the teams were balanced for every game, and the weather stayed true and didn't rain. We also discovered we could play very easily on a wet Ambleside rink. All in all, a great way to start the year. Hopefully we can expect more sessions through the upcoming weeks! Last note of the day, we had a spectator for our final match of the game who Jordan Barlow thinks was Tanner Glass of the Vancouver Canucks.

PS - Just so that next year when you are doing year-enders, I would like to say that everyone played amazing today; one might say they played like all-stars.

PPS - Can you made a minor change to the write-up to mention that Bernie was out shopping for a nice winter shawl and gown to show off during the Olympics?

Thanks, Stefan! Even in the dead of winter, we can’t seem to go more than three weeks without Burton Hockey, as VRH kicks off the 2010 season. Naturally, Pat leads the way usual with 7-5-12-48 in just three games. The Kloppster was right behind as the pair made for a fearsome tandem all day; Stefan was just one assist off Pat’s mark. Splitting third star honours were Jordan (3G-6A) and Oliver (6G-3A). Rob missed the first game but made up for it in spades with eight points in just two games. The goalies were on fire today; Dom gets off to a terrific start in net with .840; Bron was also great at .813. The infamous Bitch Award has been renamed; Bernie is the first winner of the Winter Shawl (a.k.a. Spring Sundress, Summer Gown, Autumn Formal), still given as always to anyone with a pitiful excuse for not showing up to a session.

Here are the game scores:
Pat Stefan Dominik def. Jordan Oliver Jason Bron 5-4
Pat Stefan rob Dominik def. Jordan Oliver Jason Bron 5-4
Jordan Oliver Rob Dominik def. Stefan Pat Jason Bron 5-4

Season Stats: Naturally, with this being the first session of Burton’s second decade, today’s stats represent the season stats thus far. Pat is the leader in points with twelve, one ahead of Stefan. Those two share the goal lead at seven, one ahead of Oliver. Rob has a 7-6 lead in assists over Jordan. Pat easily leads in shots. Something you may never see again: Oliver leads in shooting percentage. Dom leads in save percentage; Bron leads in saves.

On the All-Time Front: Stefan passes Seamus for fourth in all-time points. Pat passes Joe for 16th and is six behind Robert Rogers for 15th. Oliver needs one assist to become the first player to reach 1,000. Stefan becomes the sixth player with 500. Oliver passes Lorne for second in shots on goal. Pat falls behind Joe to fourth in shooting percentage. Bron is 83 saves behind Chris for third all-time. Stefan ties Seamus for third in three-star points; pat ties Joern for 12th. Jason falls behind Robert Rogers to third in APG. Bron ties Laird for fourth in .810 sessions with 16. This is Dominik’s best session since his .889 rookie debut last June. Oliver’s mammoth consecutive season streak continues into its fourth year at 42; Bernie’s streak ends at 20 (the ninth-longest ever). Dominik’s streak goes to nine. Stefan and Oliver become the first people to play eleven seasons of Burton Hockey (Lee, the Bilinskis, Joern and Bernie are also eligible).

SDF/GDF: Kyle holds on top for a second ranking, but just by a razor-thin margin over Lee; should BUSH start its season before VRH plays next, it’s very reasonable to assume Lee will take over number one. If not, look for Pat to go back on top, as he, without even having reached his minimum session count due to today’s shortened session, jumps back up to third. Stefan finally moves back into the top ten, with Jordan right behind. Very little changes on the GDF with Seamus on top again, although Shem just slides behind Nathan to third. Dom’s rating goes way up after a strong performance.

A fantastic start to the year from VRH! Will the weather allow BUSH to respond? It’s also a big day for VRH in that Burton Hockey has decided to name a 3rd all-star in ‘exceptional’ seasons with 60 or more players, meaning your 2009 3rd All-Star team has been named (Lorne Bilinski, Tony Hajdu, Stefan Klopp, Andrew Smart, and Troy Waldron in goal). Until next time, check out the Records and Honours pages in the Links section.

Earliest outdoor session ever. There was once a 2nd of January session in the Burton Hall.

It was definitely last minute, and I wasn't sure it would happen, but I gotta say, it felt pretty awesome getting to play some hockey today.

Congrats guys, earliest session ever. Good to see some boxscores rolling in again

At least you didn't choke while you were hungover. The thought of losing yet another friend to asphyxiation on their own vomit brings me to tears.

I'm choked I was hungover. The thought of me still sleeping while you guys were playing is weird.

This is the first time we've ever just flowed from one season to another like this. Sounds like it was an excellent start to hopefully another excellent year!
