Today was the last session for VRH to warm up for the big DecaSession scheduled for next week in Burton. We had a group of 12 players confirmed for the day, and decided it would be best to practice in a larger rink. We decided to go with Queen Elizabeth. On arriving at QE we quickly found a rink full of teenagers who beat our 11am start time, and won the rink. After waiting for everyone to arrive, Alex suggested a rink in West Van that might fit our numbers well. The rink was at Parc Verdun, and upon arriving looked very solid. The rink was almost identical size to Burton, with a tennis court finish. Normally we would all be happy about the lovely topping of the rink; however, with all of us using extra hard wheels it meant a lot of slipping and sliding. All things considered though, it was a beautiful rink, and somewhere new to play (cue Kyle hitting Google Earth in 5..4...3...2..).

The aim of today was to get some practice playing with guys we would play with next week in Burton, so we put Pat, Jordan B, Ryan and Alex on one team, gave them Bernie and Rob to fill out their team, and had the other team of DecaSession boys with Oliver, Lorne, Tony, Stefan, Jordan D with Dom in net. Let’s just say things did not go so well for the BUSH-bound boys who were shutout in their first game. Second game, they fared no better, getting hammered 5-1. Once again, in the third game they got smashed 5-1, and Pat was showing us all how foolish we were for not scheduling the DecaSession on a weekend he could come.

To keep with the Deca vs. non-Deca players, we traded Oliver for Rob. Rob brought instant energy to the team, and had everyone moving the puck a little better, but the results were still the same. Another 5-1blowout and another 5-point game for Pat. Game 5, Team Deca came out strong with the leadership of Rob on their team. They moved the puck well and dominated the play. A shadow by Stefan and Rob was put on Pat that appeared to shut him down after his initial few points. Deca ended up taking the game 5-3 which boosted their confidence out of the gutter.

Game 6 was back to the Elischer show, with him scoring 4 goals, and showing everyone that a shadow wasn't enough to keep him contained. A final game was played in the series; another 4 points for Pat; another 5-1 victory. Yup, Team Deca was definitely feeling pretty down and out at this point.

Lorne took off at this point. We decided to troop on for a few more games, this time with sticks in the middle. Teams ended up being Pat, Stefan, Oliver, Rob, Bernie and Dom vs. Tony, the Jordans, Ryan, and Alex. Pat was his same old self, while Stefan and Oliver made up for lost time each netting 4 points in a 5-2 route To finish off the day Stefan continued to find his scoring ability with a 4-goal breakout that led to another 5-2 finish.

The results for Team Deca were not very inspiring. Apart from game 5, they looked disconnected, and lacked a lot of communication they will need to compete come Friday. Luckily for them they won't have to play against the destructive forces of Pat and Jordan Barlow. Putting the most prolific offensive player (and sound backchecker) with one of the best defencemen in Burton Hockey is essentially a recipe for disaster for any team. One other player that will be sorely missed at the Deca is Ryan. He put in an awesome day offensively and was a force on the ball. Not only that, he is one hell of a fun dude to have around.

Other than that, not much more to say, other than everyone is super-excited for the trip. Notable people missing today were Sam, who was at hockey practice, and Joern who was shopping for a new push up bra. With the Spring Formal just around the corner, he needed something to go with his lovely lavender gown he has picked out.

Thanks, Stef! With the Deca team generally getting killed, it meant a good day on the stat sheets for Pat and Alex, and a really bad day for most of the rest. Pat put up another huge 35 points today (21G-14A), and was miles ahead; only Ryan (8G-11A) could even manage to break 15 points. Ryno is having the run of his career this month, realising the promise that saw him named 2008 rookie of the year. Third star was Rob with just 2G but a big 11A; the highest scorer of the VRH DecaSession participants. If you can think of a single session in ten years where Lorne has averaged 1.00 PPG, you’re a better man than I. It was a career day for Alex in net; he was .917 through the first four games before coming back down in the second half. Still, .820 is a career best and a great day by any standard. Saves were relatively even between the two goalies (96-90), but Dom was a victim today at .709

Here are the game scores:
Bernie Barlow Rob Pat Ryan Alex def. Tony Stefan Lorne Oliver Downey Dom 5-0 5-1 5-1
Pat Bernie Oliver Barlow Ryan Alex def. Tony Stefan Rob Lorne Downey Dom 5-1 3-5 5-2 5-1
Pat Stefan Oliver Rob Bernie Dom def. Tony Downey Barlow Ryan Alex 5-2 5-2

This session was played simultaneously with a BUSH session at McCormack Park in Burton, so you can find the statistical summaries there. Head over to the next boxscore right now for statistical treats and 147 pictures!

When Joern and Crystal still lived in Ambleside, I walked out to Horseshoe Bay and back from their place along Marine Drive.

I didn't need Google Earth, Stef; I've been to Parc Verdun on one of my myriad long-distance walks. That day, I learned that some parts of Marine Drive just aren't for pedestrians.

For the non-North Shore unfamiliar with Parc Verdun, there's an excellent Street View shot of it here:
