Today’s session wasn’t fantastic, or epic, or bathed in glorious sunshine. It was marked by ailing ankles, broken balls, and mangled masks, as well as the absence of several notable skaters. The first game saw Eric, Sam and Dom square off against Rob, Vince, Ryno and Alex in some 2 on 2 action. After a tight battle and a lengthy 4-4 stalemate, Sam and Eric finally connected to put the game away. The arrival of Tony and Oliver for Game 2 shifted things back to 3 on 3, and the pace slowed down considerably. It took forever for the first goal to be scored, but after a plodding defensive grindfest and some stellar goaltending, Ryno deked, dangled, and shot his team to victory.

Now of course, the burning question on the mind of every man, woman, dog, and child at Ambleside Park was this: Would Vince play a 3rd game? The look of unbending determination in his eyes was all you needed to see to know the answer. The pace of Game 3 was every bit as ponderous as Game 2. Rob battled hard through an ankle injury, but eventually had to leave the game with the score 3-0 for Team Dom. This resulted in some 2-on 2 with Vince, Oliver and Alex attempting to hold off the relentless assault of Tony, Ryno, Sam, and Eric. Vince sniped one short side to give Team Alex a sliver of hope, but it was short lived. Dom shut the door firmly at this point, and despite some staggering saves from Alex, Team Dom pounded 40 shots at him until Sam finally sealed the deal on a breakaway.

The fourth game saw Tony switch sides and make his presence felt with a couple of quick goals, before Sam responded with a short side marker. The game was cut short however, as Alex was struck down by a blistering shot from Sam, which broke his goalie mask and left him with a nasty gash under his left eye.

If the weather cooperates, perhaps we’ll sneak another session in before the Christmas break; if not, it’ll give everyone a chance to heal their injuries and come back rejuvenated for the start of the 2011 season.

Thanks, Oliver! This unusually small VRH session was dominated by the goalies in one of the top non-interleague duels of the season. Dom bested Alex .853-.842, but both goalie faced large volume today, especially Alex, who stopped 35 shots in Game 3. Offensively, Sam was the class of the field today, going 7-and-7 on 34 shots. You have to go down to eight points to find second-place Eric (4-4). Ryan’s Game 2 hat trick helped him to third (3-4). And Vincent finally played his first full session, which is cause for celebration in itself. The most interesting part of this boxscore, though, may be what isn’t on it, namely the name of Bernie Koth-Kappus, who missed his first session since 10 January (that’s a streak of 38 consecutive sessions come to an end). Oliver’s record 47-session streak is safe for another year.

Here are the game scores:
Eric Sam Dom def. Rob Vince Ryan Alex 5-4
Sam Tony Eric Ryan Dom def. Rob Oliver Vince Alex 5-3 5-2
Tony Vince Oliver Alex vs. Eric Ryan Sam Dom 2-1

Season Stats: Oliver crawls over the 550-point mark. Sam and Rob knock Bernie out of the top ten, 336-328-323. Eric needs ten for 200. Sam becomes the sixth player this season with 200 goals and is sixth behind Oliver for fifth. Rob and Tony pass Seamus for 12th and 13th. Eric becomes the 17th player with 100 goals this year. Oliver trails Lee for the assist lead 360-347. Tony passes Noel for 15th; Eric needs ten for 100. Alex joins Dom in the 3,000-save club this season. Oliver takes the games-played crown from Bernie at 272-269 with Dom at 265. Alex sits four away from 200, and Rob ties Nathan for tenth at 181. Sam passes Seamus for sixth in three-star points, 115-105. Alex takes the goalie star points lead from Dom, 280-275, as well as fourth in total star points with the same score.

On the All-Time Front: Oliver needs ten points to become the second player with 2,200. Ryan is one point behind Ben for 19th. Oliver has now climbed back to retake third in all-time goals from Stefan with 847. Sam needs 20 for 300. Ryan ties Joe Chwachka for 15th, and Tony jumps from 20th to 18th in goals, right behind Jordan Barlow. Ryan needs four assists for 200; Eric ties Noel for 25th. Tony becomes the 19th player with 1,000 shots on goal. Dom becomes the first goalie with 4,500 saves; Alex the ninth with 3,000. Alex needs four games for 200. Dom passes Bron for third in goalie star points with 340. The abrupt end to Game 4 kills Sam’s 15-pointer streak at three (cruelly, he was at 14). Dom ties Laird for fourth in .800 sessions with 21. Alex has the second-longest .800 streak ever with six (Justin had ten straight last season). Alex passes Seamus for fifth in 80-savers with 24, including twelve in a row (the third-longest streak ever); Dom’s streak ends at four. Alex’s 90-saver streak ends at eleven, one short of tying his own Burton record, and his 100-savers streak ends at four. With the end of Bernie’s consecutive session streak at 38, the longest streak in VRH now belongs to Oliver at 21 (Lee has 29 in BUSH). Dom goes to 13, and Rob and Sam both go to five. For Sam, it’s his first-ever five-session streak. Alex will join Dom as the only two goalies to make 3,000 saves in a season. Oliver steals the all-time single-season games played from Bernie, 272-269 (Dom is at 265). Alex takes the single-season goalie star points record from Dom, 280-275.

SDF/GDF: 3 May 2009 was the last time that there were only 26 players on the SDF. Pat drops a bit from his record rating but still more than easily leads. Marcus and Jordan Barlow move up to four and fifth ahead of Lee; Eric falls from the top twelve. Over on the GDF, Joe Leonard falls to one session on the ranking, leaving Alex and Dom the only two goalies with full value on the system.

If that was it for 2010, it’s been a hell of a run. That said, there’s still time for more VRH action. Until next time, check out the Records and Honours pages in the Links section.

I'm nothing if not environmentally conscious......can you carve lightning bolts into it??

Alex, I will fashion you a new mask out of my homemade broken hockey stick. It will be heavy, you may get face slivers, it may shrink and swell, it may be the worst goalie mask of all time, but it will be environmentally sound.
