After one of its longest dry spells (well over 2 months) in recent memory, VRH would finally hit the pavement of Ambleside once again. Even so, the player turnout would be sparse with only 5 skaters. Sam Lam’s long awaited return from exile at Quadra Island, dealing with residents and transients alike, would spur VRH back into action, and also provide a second goalie, something which had been more-or-less non-existent of late.

Despite a high pressure ridge hanging over top of southern BC, Vancouver, thanks to its ocean micro-climate, would unfortunately see mostly low-level marine cloud on this day. The cool fall temperatures were certainly a welcome relief, though.

With 5 skaters, a hybrid 3-on-2 game was the flavor du jour. The first series would see Stefan & Rob, back-stopped by Sam take on Oliver-Bernie-Griff-Sam(G). Although play was fairly even, Dom was his usual brilliant self and bailed his team out on numerous occasions. In the end, Team Dom would take the series in 2 games.

Next, to alleviate Stefan’s & Rob’s exhaustion, Bernie was brought over to their team and the goalies were switched. This game was a little more lopsided for the 3-man team, and despite winning the first one handily, Team Sam wanted a shot at redemption. Unfortunately, though, there would be on redemption on this day.

One more game was played before a couple of players had to leave, thereby ending the session. Despite the low numbers and less than glorious weather, everyone had a blast and was just happy to get back out there and play some VRH hockey. Goaltenders and overall numbers are still a major issue for VRH, and the splendid Sumtober weather is bound to turn eventually, so the prognosis for VRH’s immediate future is far from great, but the attempt to get sessions together will certainly still be there.

Also, I should probably bring up that, as of right now, Lee is poised to take top spot on the GDF next session. Not the SDF, the GDF. Lee Orr as your top-ranked goalie. Think about that.

My plan is getting there the 15th/16th, heading to Victoria for a couple days on the 19th/20th following Del, and then coming back on the 21st for a couple more days in Vancouver. I would guess the 15th, 16th, and 22nd would be hockey options.

Coming down for Del and NIN in mid November. Love to get in some hockey if possible. Thinking maybe coming early the 15/16th?

Great to see some fall action! It amazes me sometimes when I read all-time boxscores and realize the parity between BUSH and VRH. Back when the Vancouver side started I never dreamed a group of guys could love doing this as much as us. Proud of us all for keeping this going year after year. Truly one of my favorite pastimes.
