What can you say about today? It was wet and sloppy outside, and so was much of the play throughout the day. Bad bounces, balls breaking (close to thirty dollars in zero-bounce balls), own goals. It was not pretty hockey in the least, yet despite all the ugliness we managed to play 8 games on a day where we were not sure we would even play.

Today also say the return of Joern in net, who hadn't played goal since the fall. You could tell Joern hadn't played goal in a long time, as it took a long time for him to shake off the rust. Griff and Sam especially had Joern's number today. Alex faced off against Joern as the other goalie for the day. It was interesting to see the massive difference in equipment size. Joern using pads that date back to the early years of Burton Hockey, and are barely wider than his legs, to Alex who is retrofitted in full ice hockey goalie pads. Times are a-changing.

The first couple series we played Vancouver boys vs. Kootenay boys. A best-of-5 series saw Team Vancouver win the series 3-1. Griff took off at this point, and another sticks in the middle produced somewhat similar teams. Another attempt at a best-of-5 series led to a tied-up series 2-2. However, at this point everyone was wet, tired, and unable to finish the final fifth game, so we left this sloppy day hoping for drier conditions in the future.

Thanks, Stef! The VRH crew proved once again that both leagues of Burton Hockey can overcome the elements time in, time out. It was a quite interesting result, as we had two players tie for first star; one with only one previous win and the other celebrating his first time topping the podium. The top honours were spilt today between Ryan (12G-9A) and first-time winner Sam (10G-11A). This also marks a career-high point total for Ryno. Congrats to both! It was a tight race for third, won by Stefan (10G-8A), just edging out Jordan, who led the session in assists with an even dozen. One can only imagine how Griff would have fared if he had played the whole session; he notched 13 points in just four games. As for the goalies, Alex was his usual steady self at .782; Joern will want to make up for his .714.

Here are the game scores:
Vancouver (Sam Griff Ryan Alex) def. Kootenays (Stefan Oliver Jordan Bernie Joern) 5-2 5-2 3-5 5-2
Jordan Ryan Stefan Joern vs. Oliver Sam Bernie Alex 4-5 5-1 5-3 5-3

With 15 games spread over two leagues today, there was a ton of action. To save your eyeballs, we’ll sum up the season and all-time stats affected by both of Saturday’s sessions in today’s BUSH session write-up. Done here? Then go there!

Love these pictures! That one of Stef and Jordan both touching the ball in midair is crazy.
