With VRH's longest absence in nearly half a year, things were once again not looking good as blizzard hit the Lower Mainland on the Thursday prior, dumping nearly a half-foot of snow. Luckily, the intense coastal system also brought warmer temperatures and a plethora of rain which worked effectively wash all of the snow away by Sunday. Even though it did not turn out to be sunny as predicted, it did stay dry and the rink, although it needed a little cleaning work, was quite playable.

With a couple maybes and a couple last minute confirmations we would actually begin the day with 9 skaters. A couple of games were played until Vince had to leave (yes, Vince once again fails to break the two game barrier) for a memorial service. At this point new teams were created which would stick for the rest of the day. Rob-Marcus-Bernie-Rhino-Alex would take the 5 game series by a 3-1 margin over Eric-Sam-J-Bo-Ollie-Dom. As everyone had a little left in the tank one more game was played with these teams, and E-S-J-O-D would get redemption taking the final game by a 5-1 margin.

A few more interesting occurrences this session: Al got hit in the mask twice by hard slap shots, both of which dented his mask quite severely. And it certainly wasn't Rob's day in terms of fluke injuries. First he was seeing stars after getting nailed in the head by a stick or an elbow (who knows). Then to add insult to injury, he took a J-Bo powered slap shot straight to the testicular region; this saw him fall like a sack of bricks and writhe on the ground in agony for a good 5 minutes.

It was certainly great to get back out there again after a 3 week hiatus. Let's hope we get a little more luck from the weathermaker and get a couple more sessions in before the end of the year.

Thanks, Bernie. Eric’s strong second half of the year continues as he takes first star with 10G-8A. Tying for second are Sam (10G-5A) and Rob (9G-6A). Over in net, Alex had a solid day despite his dented mask mishap with .802 on 101 saves to Dom’s .750 on 84 saves. It should be noted that Bernie scored four goals in Game 5.

Here are the game scores:
Eric Bernie Oliver Jordan Rob Alex def. Ryan Vincent Marcus Sam Dom 5-2 5-4
Rob Marcus Bernie Ryan Alex def. Eric Sam Jordan Oliver Dom 5-2 2-5 5-3 5-4 1-5

Season Stats: Jordan needs ten points to become the sixth player this year to score 400. Bernie narrowly leads Sam and Rob for ninth, 323-322-322. Marcus is nine points behind Tony for 15th. Sam needs seven goals for 200.Marcus becomes the 16th person this year with 100; Eric needs four. Oliver trails Lee for the assist lead by just 17 (360-343). Jordan passes Nathan for fifth in assists and trails Seamus for fourth, 248-232. Rob reaches 200 assists; Bernie needs eleven. Oliver and Sam each pass 1,000 shots on goal. Dom reaches 250 games in net; Alex needs eight for 200. Sam passes Nathan for seventh in three-star points and is five behind Seamus with 100. Alex ties Dom for the lead in goalie star points with 265 (and for fourth in total star points at the same score).

On the All-Time Front: Oliver needs 15 points for 2,200. Bernie is 14 points behind Kyle for sixth in all-time points. Jordan passes Laird and Mitch Detta for 14th on the all-time list and needs one point for 500. Ryan becomes the 20th player with 400 points and is eight behind Ben for 19th. Oliver ties Stefan for third in goals with 846. Ryan is three goals behind Joe Chwachka for 15th, with Jordan four behind Ryan. Rob needs four goals for 200. Bernie is 20 assists behind Seamus for third. Jordan needs twelve assists for 300; Ryan needs eight for 200. Alex passes Shem for ninth in saves and needs 43 saves for 3,000. Jordan plays his 250th game. Alex is eight games in goal behind Seamus for eight with 192. Alex is five goalie star points behind Shem for seventh with 265. Sam has three straight 15-pointers for the first time in his career. Alex has five straight .800 sessions, but his record-tying .840 streak ends at four. Dom becomes the first goalie with 30 80-savers including four straight; Alex ties Seamus for fifth with 23 including eleven straight. Alex trails Dom in 90-savers 25-23 and is one short of his own Burton record with eleven straight 90-savers (Dom’s streak ends at three). Alex ties Nathan and Bron for second in 100-savers with 18, two behind Dom (including four in a row). Bernie plays consecutive session 38, Oliver 20, Dom twelve. Alex ties Dom’s single-season goalie star point record with 265.

SDF/GDF: Another weeks on top with a record score for Pat (68th all-time, 22 in a row). Marcus drops a spot behind Lee to fifth; Sam rises three spots to sixth and Eric three to twelfth. No movement whatsoever on the GDF as Alex holds; he does slip below .840 again while Dom falls just under .800. When Joe Leonard’s next session falls off, Alex and Dom will be the only qualifying goalies remaining on the rank, a testament to their durability and to the early end of BUSH for 2010.

VRH will try again next weekend. Until next time, check out the Records and Honours pages in the Links section.

I'd also like to take credit for the elbow/stick combination to Rob's head.
