Today was relatively new territory for Vancouver Roller Hockey: an attempt at a weekday session. Even with a 6pm start time, it still had potential to be a decently long session thanks to the long summer evening. Certainly, even at 8pm, it was sweltering summer heat. Turnout was solid, with nine of VRH’s finest and a humble statistician to go with them. Of course, Ambleside Park was hopping on a hot summer evening such as this, and three different sets of soccer players trying to take the court were rebuffed today. Enabled by the weekday start time, Lorne and Darrel would each play for the first time in a while (heck, even Scott Edison dropped by during Game 6). Fast paced 3-on-3 would dominate the session today.

There would only be one multi-game series today. With Marcus not yet arrived, the first three games would see Sam, Jordan, Stefan and Alex take on Lorne, Rob and the brothers Voser (Darrel’s band T-shirt of choice today, by the way, was Metric). Game 1 was short and sweet, especially if your last name was Lam, Barlow, or Elischer. Sam potted five goals on five shots, all assisted by Jordan, giving Alex the shutout. Not that Alex didn’t face his fair share of shots (fourteen, mostly from Lorne). Dom, meanwhile, was just 7-for-12. That situation would reverse itself quickly in Game 2, as Lorne led his team to three straight goals to start. Ultimately, he would point out, and Team Dom would win 5-2. Lorne, Rob and Darrel worked well together all game, and that would carry on throughout the rest of the session, including Game, which was also won 5-2 by Team Dom.

Marcus had arrived by this point, and after warding off another challenge from soccer players for control of the rink (evidently it’s a ,000 fine at Ambleside for playing soccer on the grass, go figure), he teamed up with Sam, Jordan and Dom to face the Rob-Darrel-Lorne combo, this time backed by Alex and featuring Stefan as a sub. After three lopsided games, Game 4 was a pretty even tilt, going 25 minutes (the longest game of the day). Alex stopped 23 shots to help his crew pull out the 5-4 win. Alex was never lower than .820 all day (after Game 2) and just kept climbing as Dom stayed steady in the other goal. Jordan had some equipment issues at the beginning of Game 5, and so he was moved to Alex’s sub team in exchange for Stefan. It was a fortunate move, as he joined the Rob-Darrel-Lorne axis en route to a 5-0 rout. Alex grabbed his second shutout in five games, and twelfth of the season. It’s rather scary to think that he’s on pace to set a new career shutout record in just his first year. One lowlight of the game was Lorne getting his stick caught in the fence and jabbing himself in the stomach quite hard, sending him to the ground. The teams were reset to the Game 4 line-ups for Game 6, but it changed nothing: Lorne was going to the trough feasting on greasy goals and led the way again with a 5-1 victory. Dom picked it up in this game and kept it going longer than it should have, but Alex was just a rock. Another lowlight saw Sam and Rob collide knee-on-knee; Sam was sent crashing to the ground and Rob limped of the court, opting to call it a day rather than take a chance aggravating the knee further.

Lorne was done after Game 6, having taken over the session scoring lead from Sam with the first goal of Game 3 and running away from that point. It would take two games for anyone to catch him (he was six points up on Stefan at this point), and that’s exactly what entailed, as a rare pair of 2-on-2 games were played in VRH. Marcus, Stefan, Jordan and Alex would have a sub Sam, Rob and Dom. In BUSH experience, 2-on-2 with one sub hasn’t worked, but it was actually pretty decent tonight with the games being a lot closer than the scores would indicate, especially Game 7. Marcus and Stefan broke out in Game 7 with four points each en route to a 5-2 win. Alex was over .870 for the first time all session, but that would end in Game 8 as Sam and Jordan paired up with Dom behind them. With Darrel opting to sit on the bench for the final game, Stefan and Marcus switched to Alex. Oddly enough, those three together, having just won the previous game 5-2, would go down by the same score. It took about 5-6 minutes for Sam and Jordan to jell, but once they did, it was over quickly. Stefan did manage to get two points to tie Lorne. Thus ended a very successful weekday session for VRH, hopefully the first of many in the future. The first 90 minutes or so were still pretty hot, but when the sun finally started to move down after that it was perfect weather for hockey.

Even though he missed the two final games, Lorne still took a share of the win today with 8G-13A. It took Stefan two more games to catch him with 7G-14A. It was a tight race behind Lorne all day, but Jordan eked out third star by a point (7G-14A) over Sam (a nice 14-4 Pavel ratio) and Darrel (an evenhanded 8G-9A). Over in goal, it was a career-best performance from Alex who was dominant all day, and it showed with .857 on 132 saves with two shutouts; a superlative performance from the younger Elischer. Dom started off rocky in Game 1 but ultimately wound up hovering between .790 and .810 all day quite consistently. He finished with .793 on 119 saves.

Here are the faceoff stats:
Rob Hajdu 3/3 (100.00%)
Marcus Keighron 2/2 (100.00%)
Sam Lam 2/4 (50.00%)
Lorne Bilinski 1/3 (33.33%)

Season Stats: Stefan becomes the fifth player to score 300 points this season. Jordan passes Justin for eighth and passes 200 points on the year. Sam passes the Hajdus for 13th; Marcus ties Tony for 15th. Lorne becomes the 19th player this year with 100 points and the 18th with 50 goals. Rob becomes the tenth player with 100 assists this season. Stefan passes 800 shots on goal; Sam passes 500; Rob passes 400. Alex has twelve shutouts this season; the next closest goalie (Shem) has four. Alex ties Seamus for second in goalie star points with 150 and is 15 behind Dom for the lead.

On the All-Time Front: Lorne needs nine points to become the third player to score 1,500; Stefan becomes the fourth to pass 1,400. Stefan also has 900 points now in VRH competition. Jordan and Rob become the 22nd and 23rd players to score 300 points. Lorne becomes the second player to score 900 goals. Sam is three goals out of the top 20. Lorne needs nine assists for 600. Rob passes Ryan Disterheft to enter the top 20 in assists; Marcus enters the top 30. Stefan passes Oliver for second in shots on goal. Dom passes Joern for sixth in saves. Alex passes Joern and ties Justin for fourth in shutouts with twelve. Alex passes Joern to enter the top ten in goalie star points. Jordan posts his tenth career 15-pointer. Lorne remains one 20-pointer ahead of Stefan for third, 28-27. Stefan ties Kyle for fourth in ten-assisters with 20. Jordan has two ten-assisters in a row. Dom ties Chris for fifth in 80-savers with 21, Justin for third in 90-savers with 18, and Shem for third in 100-savers with 15. Alex records his tenth 100-saver. Alex ties Shem for fifth in 120-savers with six, and ties Chris and Nathan for third in 130-savers with five. Dom has back-to-back 110-savers; Alex has back-to-back 130-savers and is the only goalie to do it twice in his career. Dom plays his 14th consecutive session, Alex and Marcus their tenth. Dom becomes the first player to goaltend 150 games in a single season. Alex’s 150 goalie star points tie for the third-highest mark in a single year ever.

SDF/GDF: Adding today’s session to Sunday’s Heffley session changes up the ranking quite notable behind Pat. Lorne vaults up from 14th to second ahead of Kyle as he nears the session minimum. Sam only falls to eighth rather than twelfth, and Nathan falls two spots to eleventh. On the GDF, this means Alex has sole possession of first place rather than sharing it with Seamus.

On to the weekend, where both leagues will try for more action. Until next time, check out the Records and Honours pages in the Links section.
